Our beloved Richard Marvin Harold passed away in his sleep on February 18, 2024, while deeply missing his “sweetheart” Phyllis, who one month prior had left this world to prepare an eternal place for them. Together, they resided at a nursing home in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Richard was born July 28, 1929 at his parents’ home in Glenwood, Iowa, to Marvin G Harold and Velma M Osborne Harold. He was the oldest of three children; his brother Lloyd and sister Nancy preceding him in death. He spent his childhood in Glenwood and graduated from Glenwood High School in 1947. Richard continued his education at the University of Iowa earning a Bachelor of Science degree in marketing. He was active in the Pi Kappa Alpha-Kappa Psi Fraternity. During this time, he met and married Phyllis Taenzler on September 17, 1949, at the First Christian Church in Glenwood, Iowa. While in college, Richard was a member of the Iowa State Guards and Iowa National Guards, Advanced ROTC.

In 1951, Richard was recruited by Sears Roebuck & Co who placed him in their Reserve Group Training Program at the Waterloo Iowa store. In 1955, Sears promoted him to their Headquarters in Chicago to work in the Sears Automotive Merchandising Department. In 1988, after working at Sears for 38 years, he took his retirement.

They lived in Palatine, Illinois from 1959 to 1988. They were active in the Arlington Heights Christian Church where Richard taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, and was an Elder for 15 years. After retirement, they moved back home to Glenwood, remained active in the church, and he in the choir. They became snowbirds from 1988 to 2013, living half of the year in Mesa, Arizona, where he sang in the church choir. For many years, Richard and Phyllis were members of the Wally Byam Caravan Club International, the club for active Airstream trailers and motorhomes owners. He held many chairmanship positions in that club, including the chairman of the Caravan Standing Committee for all of the club’s trips.

Richard is survived by his daughter and her husband Sharon and Roy Niswonger of Crossville Tennessee, son Richard Marvin Harold II and grandson Richard Marvin Harold III in Oviedo, Florida; sister-in-laws Clara Harold and Barbara Taenzler of Glenwood, Iowa, Julie (Ron) Schneckloth of Omaha, Nebraska, and Margaret (Don) Hart of Atlantic, Iowa; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents Marvin and Velma Harold, brother Lloyd Harold, sister Nancy (Paul) Anderson, son-in-law Will Tadrowski, and daughter-in-law Kem Harold.

The family wishes to send a special thank you to the staff at Midlands Living Center in Council Bluffs, Iowa, for their care and compassion for both Richard and Phyllis.

Interment, Glenwood Cemetery, Glenwood, Iowa.
