Janice Margaret (Slaughter) Hunt

Janice Margaret (Slaughter) Hunt, 103 of Glenwood, IA entered into rest on Dec. 31, 2013 in Council Bluffs, IA. She was born Oct. 6, 1910 in Mills County to John Elijah & Clara Vida (Andrews) Slaughter. She was raised near the town of Hillsdale.

At the age of ten her mother died and she helped raise her 2 brothers and 2 sisters. She attended Hillsdale Grade School and graduated from Glenwood High School in 1928 with a teaching certificate and taught at Hillsdale, Barbee, Mt. Pleasant and West Oak country schools.

She was united in marriage to Freddie Burdette Hunt on Feb. 25, 1933 in Rockport, MO. To this union three daughters were born, Janette, Carolyn and Barbara. After the birth of Janette, Janice decided to stay home to raise her family and help her husband on the farm. Side by side they worked in the fields, raised cattle, hogs, chickens, and a large vegetable garden. She always had beautiful flowerbeds with many varieties of iris. They also sold cream and eggs to local people to make homemade ice cream. Nothing went to waste.

Janice received the “Homemaker of the Year of Mills County” award in 1987. She was a 4-H Leader and a mentor for many girls in the community, was a member of Hillsdale U.M.W. and R.I.C. and was an active lifetime member of the Hillsdale United Methodist Church. Using her music talent she was the church pianist for over 50 years. Her cooking skills aided her as she and the other church ladies raised thousands of dollars with the food stand at the Mills County Fair and the 4th of July celebration. Her crafty talent led her to start the Quilt Bats quilting group showing all who wanted to learn the art of quilting.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Burdette; Brothers, Drayton and Theron Slaughter; sisters, Virginia (Amos) Jensen and Ardis (Lawrence) Pace, son-in-law, Marvin Boyce and grandson-in-law, Randy Fundermann.

She is survived by daughters, Janette (Bruce) Blackburn, Carolyn Boyce and Barbara (Terry) Sell; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great grandchildren; many nephews, nieces and a host of friends.

Interment will be held in the Glenwood Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Hillsdale United Methodist Church.

So sorry for your loss. I have fond memories of her at the Hillsdale Church and in 4-H. She and I played together for church services when I was in high school. She was a special lady.
