Evelyn M. Banks

Evelyn Banks, 96 of Council Bluffs, Iowa, former resident of Glenwood, Iowa, passed away January 16, 2024.

Evelyn M. Banks passed away January 16, 2024 at Prairie Gate in Council Bluffs, Iowa. She was born June 18, 1927 in Corning, Iowa, the youngest of 5 siblings just two years prior to the Great Depression. Her father William died when she was 3 years old and her mother Alma passed when she was 15. All of her siblings had already moved away at the time of her mother’s death. She lived her high school years in a rooming house and worked at a local diner before and after school. In return, she received free meals along with minimal pay and tips.

Evelyn was united in marriage to Lloyd Banks on June 15, 1947. To this union two sons were born, Jerry and Larry. Lloyd passed away two weeks before their 75th anniversary. While Lloyd worked on the railroad and was building houses, Evelyn managed the best she could for their sons. She did all the home building accounting  for the family business, Flat Iron Inc. and for years was also a bookkeeper for the local veterinarian and close family friend Doc Troutman. Her favorite hobby was cooking and caring for her family. Evelyn’s second favorite hobby was playing bridge. She served on the Regional Library Board and volunteered at the Glenwood Public Library for a number of years.

Preceding Evelyn in passing was her husband Lloyd Banks and son Larry Banks. Survivors include her son Jerry Banks of Omaha, Nebraska; daughter-in-law Yolanda Hua; grandchildren Sheila (David) Marquez of Walnut Creek, California; Kelley (Mike) Green; Lindsay (Darren) Cunningham all of LaVista, Nebraska; as well as nine grandchildren.

No services are planned.

Private interment at a later date, Glenwood Cemetery, Glenwood, Iowa.

Jerry and Family, We were so sorry to hear of your Mom’s passing. Our sincere condolences to you and your family. Your parents were great friends of my sisters (Ag & Marie) and their families. I remember your Mom and you boys coming out to the farm with Ag. We were able to connect with your Mom & Dad the last few years as they lived close to our neighborhood. They came to our 50th wedding anniversary and enjoyed seeing my nieces and their families. We also had them for lunch here and thoroughly enjoyed reminiscing. They were such a special and fun couple and we all have fond memories of them. RIP Evelyn.
