Clara Mae (Johnson) Barkus

Clara Mae (Johnson) Barkus, 89 of Glenwood, Iowa entered into rest on May 19, 2017. She was born on March 11, 1928 in Mills County, Iowa to Sivert Wilhelm & Minnie May (Johnson) Johnson. Clara Mae graduated from Glenwood High School in 1945. She was united in marriage to Edwin L. Barkus on June 23, 1946 in Glenwood, Iowa. Their marriage was blessed with three children, Doug, Yvonne and Saundra. She lived in the jail for several years and was a huge part of that operation by answering phones, as well as making meals for the prisoners. She was then a secretary for Glenn Electric until her retirement. Later she wanted something to do so she worked at Tri-Star one day a week for her fun money. Some of Clara Mae’s pastimes included reading, going to the casino, baking, being with her dogs and monthly lunch dates with her cousins. Even though she has passed away her love for her family and friends remains with them forever. As her time was drawing near, two cardinals landed on the window sill, a sign from her daughters who are now all reunited.

Preceding Clara Mae in passing were her parents, husband, two daughters, one grandson, infant sister and five brothers. Survivors include her son Doug (Jeanette) Barkus of Broomfield, CO; nine grandchildren; twenty-four great-grandchildren and many friends.

Memorials may be made to Hospice With Heart, Glenwood Public Library or American Legion Post 141.

Clara Mae was so upbeat! At family dinners, Aunt Clara Mae and Glenn were always joshing about “anything”! Glenn always claimed his baby sister was found on top of a fence post. We will miss your smiling face, but know you are in a better place with no suffering and enjoying your brothers’ antics.
