Arvella Arlene (Hindman”)” Bacon, one of America’s greatest generation, passed into eternal rest on 01-14-2022.

Arvella wed Russell (Ted) Bacon on October 12, 1946, and this union was blessed with six children; Sandra Fowler (Wayne), Sherry Reed, Steven Bacon (Sharon), Susan Reed (Mark), Shelly Hane (David) and Russell Ted Bacon.  Arvella became a widow in 1962 leaving her the monumental tasks of mother, father, head of household, income provider, disciplinarian, child psychologist;  I am sure you all get the picture.  Her life was always overflowing with family, friends, and to do tasks.

It wasn’t just family and children that kept Arvella busy, she was also actively involved in the VFW, the First Congregational Church, the Eagles, various bowling leagues, the Glenwood Education Association and she walked beans with lifetime friends Marianne and Bill Johnson.

She taught in the Glenwood Community School District until her retirement in  1993.  She enjoyed traveling and spent many hours on the road with her brother Anton Hindman on their annual trek to Washington State for fishing.  Arvella also traveled to many states during her years of bowling for state and national tournaments.

Some remembered “Arvellaisms” include but are not  limited to – “You’ll get glad in the same pants you got mad in“, “Bacons and elephants never forget:, “A rolling stone gathers no moss”, “You won’t see it on the back of a galloping horse”.

Arvella leaves behind a legacy of selfless giving as an example to her six children, fourteen grandchildren, forty-three great grandchildren, six great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Interment, Glenwood Cemetery, Glenwood, Iowa.

Memorial donations may be directed to: First Congregational U.C.C or the Glenwood Volunteer Fire Association.

Thank you. When this town stepped up and helped her after our father passed, she always felt like she needed to give back. Not because of what the town did, but what she could give back that could possibly make a difference to someone. She will be truly missed.

Lorna, so sorry for the late reply to your lovely tribute to our mother. I can tell you we all still miss her today. I can also tell you that the lessons in life she gave to us I try to adhere to daily. I fully embrace the 5th commandment “Honor thy father and mother” and try daily to apply something of what she believed in.
