William Gene “Bill” Mass, 87 of Silver City, Iowa passed from this world on December 30, 2025. He was born January 4, 1938 in Council Bluffs, Iowa to John William and Alvena Louise (Roenfeldt) Mass. Bill was raised on the family farm and moved to the homeplace to continue being a farmer, cattleman and a lover of music.
Bill met Shirley Schoening at a polka dance in Treynor, Iowa and they were married on Valentine’s Day in 1963. They farmed east of Silver City and raised their sons Ryan and Nathan there. He grew corn because he had to and kept the cows because he wanted to; for this his family shall always be thankful.
In 1994, Shirley lost her battle with cancer. On a certain fall day that year, Bill began escorting Barbara Kruse to dances at the stockyards ballroom in Omaha. They were married on June 1, 1996 and traveled the world with their friends.
Preceding Bill in passing were his parents and sister Sharon Mielke. Survivors include his wife Barbara; sister Elaine (Danny) Roenfeldt; sons Ryan (Amie) Nathan (Sandra); grandsons Zach, Will, Brendan and Ben; stepdaughters Julie, Trisha and Shawna; step-grandchildren; Mackenzie, Courtney, Emmy, Syidney, Jackson, Parker and Kaden; extended relatives and friends.
Memorial donations have been designated to: St. John Lutheran Church or the Mills County Fair Board.

So sorry for your loss Barb . Thoughts and prayers for you and your family .
Barb and Family,
What an honor to have been a friend of ‘Salt of the Earth’ Bill for so many years. He, I, and Gerald Kruse regularly teamed up in high school as the Three Musketeers to socialize, play some hoops, chase some girls, and save the world – – which we pretty much got done, except for the last one. I and all will miss Bill dearly. May the memories you made with him give you peace and tranquility.
