Thelma Pauline Craig was born to George Emory Swinney and Lillie Lila Timmerman, March 2, 1923 in rural Mills County, Iowa. Her parents farmed so she attended country schools through 8th grade. She attended the Glenwood High School, graduating as the salutatorian of the Class of 1940. During her high school years, she met her future husband, Roy Maro Craig.

She went to Wayne State College, getting her teaching certificate so that she could teach in the country schools in Mills County. At this time, Maro joined the Navy and was an active participant in the South Pacific during World War II. When he came home on leave in February of 1944, they were married.

Pauline loved being a wife and in January of 1945 she became a mother to Terry Jean. In 1949, Naomi Lou was born in July. December of 1952, the family was complete with the birth of George Roy “Mack”. In 1953 they all moved to the “big house” on Grove Street. She resided there until her death on November 8, 2019.

Pauline did many things in her lifetime. She taught grade school, helped her husband run their plumbing and heating business, was a teacher’s assistant, owned and operated Fabric Land with her daughter, Terry and last but not least she worked at her sister, Rachel and daughter Terry’s resale shop, “This N’ That”. She loved people and was a very good salesperson. She was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church, the American Legion Auxiliary and an Honorary 4-H member.

Her favorite title was Grandmother without a doubt. She loved them all and spoiled them rotten.

Preceding Pauline in death were her parents, her beloved husband, son-in-law, Louis Jenson; brother-in-law, Bill Carlile; sister-in-law, Ila Jean Swinney and dear friend Dale Sell.

Survivors include her children, Terry Craig, Naomi Lou Jenson and George “Mack” and wife Leesa Craig; grandchildren, Craig (Vicky) Florian, Mike (Bea) Florian; Christy (Tim) Dority, Jennifer (Richard) Roberts, Joseph Maro (Katie) Craig, Kelly Craig (Mike) Schrum, great-grandchildren, Jessica Florian (John), Tommy and Alysa Knutson, Zane Florian, Marcus and Myka Craig, Calvin, Charlotte and Margaret Schrum. Great-great-grandchildren: Aliyah Hippolyte, Nolan and Savanna Dorsey, Aniyah and Amir Knutson. Sister, Rachel Carlile, brother, George Lee Swinney and his family, many cousins, extended relatives and friends.

Pauline’s dream was to be a wife and mother. Her dream came true.

Memorials may be given to the family towards the Pauline Craig Classroom in Ghana or the Waubonsie Church.

Interment, Glenwood Cemetery, Glenwood, Iowa.

    Craig Families,

Words, however kind, can’t mend your heartache, but those who care and share your loss wish you comfort and peace of mind. May you find strength in the love of family and in the warm embrace of friends. Peace be with you and your family.

I just loved talking to Pauline. She had such a wealth of knowledge. She reminded me so much of my Aunt MaryLouise. I don’t know how many times I think to myself my aunt would know. That’s it will be with Pauline. I’m sure she’s enjoying being reunited with her loved ones.

Pauline was a wonderful lady, so active in her church and community. She always took great pride in her family and their activities. My sympathies to you all. Take comfort knowing she is in the presence of her Savior, and free from pain and suffering. She will be missed.

I am going to miss seeing Pauline with her warm smile and her update on the family members! There has always been a connection between the Swinney’s and the Mayberry’s in the neighborhood! My heartfelt condolences at this time, and know your family are in my thoughts and prayers at this difficult time of loss.
