R. Bernice Schuster

Ruth Bernice Schuster, 94 of Glenwood, Iowa passed away in her home and surrounded by her family on December 2, 2020. She was born March 18, 1926 in Beatrice, Nebraska to Julius Henry and Ruth Mary (Stuermer) Ahl. At the age of 13 she made a profession of faith in Jesus Christ and was baptized in the First Baptist Church, Beatrice. Bernice graduated from high school in Beatrice. She was united in marriage to Leonard Schuster, and to this union two children were born, Susan Lynette and Victor Leonard.

Leonard and Bernice moved to Glenwood in 1962 where together they opened and operated Schuster’s NAPA Auto Supply. After raising their children in Glenwood, Bernice had an encounter with God that was life changing for her. A highlight of that time was a trip to Israel with a large group of believers from all over the U.S. They eventually returned to Glenwood where they sold the business and retired. Her faithful devotion to her Lord and Savior as well as to her family was exemplified in her daily life.

Bernice had the kindest soul of anyone I have ever met. Her generosity to one that was hurting was unmatched. What a wonderful example of Jesus she was! May her beautiful spirit live on in the hearts of all of those who love her.

Sweet aunt Bernice… we called her aunt Bernice because she was our mother’s aunt. Our grandfather was Elmer Ahl, her older brother, and our mom was Ruth Lynn Ahl Knight. The Lord blessed us with a wonderful family. The love of the Lord trickled down through each generation and aunt Bernice had an amazing heart for the Lord and was such an inspiration to the three of us sisters. She was quite the role model and prayer warrior for all those who needed. We cherished our phone conversations with her, even saving messages so we can hear her voice now. We loved her and we know she loved us. We will miss her and all that she brought to our lives but we rejoice in the fact that she is at peace forevermore with her Savior!

Thank you, aunt Bernice, for all you’ve been to us…

PS… We will see you again!

    Dear Susie and David,
Sorry to hear about Bernice’s passing, even though you told me that it was near. When I would run into Bernice at the library, or around the town square of Glenwood, she was always so friendly to me.. I know she had a very strong faith and that she is happy in the afterlife. Thinking of you.

So wonderful to know that your mom is safe in the arms of the Lord. Enjoyed getting to know her through these words remembering her life. In these days, what a blessing that the family could be with her in the last moments.

  • Susie Sargent. Blessed to have known & loved Bernice Posted December 16, 2020 2:36 pm

I first met Bernice at church when I was a young mother, she offered to hold our 2 mth. old son so I could have a break. My son is now 35, that is how many wonderful years I got to spend with her in bible study & having coffee at her house to soak in her words of wisdom.Simply put, she loved the Lord. She encouraged & challenged me.I will never forget when I would ask her advice on something, she frequently would say, “well, pray about it, and see what God tells you.” Meaning, she knew I needed to do the spiritual work of asking God to work in my life & seek Him. I never left her place without spending time with her in prayer. This is Bernice; Psalm 71: 14.. But I will hope continually & will praise you more & more.My mouth will tell about your righteousness & your salvation all day long, though I cannot sum them up.Even while I am old & gray God, do not abandon me, while I proclaim your power to another generation, your strength to all who are to come.

Mr. and Mrs. Schuster were my Sunday School teachers at FBC Siloam Springs, AR, when I was in grade school. We shared the same birthday and maybe that is why she took me under her wing. Sometimes we would go to Pizza Hut for lunch, and we would talk about anything and everything–mostly God’s word. Throughout the years, we have been in touch–over 40 years now. Last year at Christmas I received a lovely card and letter (her handwriting was always so beautiful!) and a picture of she and her great-granddaughter. When I didn’t receive a card this year, I wondered if she had gone to heaven. She missed your dad, and they are now finally together. Please know that she made an impact on a little girl, many years ago. Blessings and condolences to your family…
