Interment and Military Honors will be in the Glenwood Cemetery.

Melvin A. “Mel” Belt, 85, of Glenwood, IA entered into eternal rest on Sept. 12, 2011 in Glenwood, IA. He was born Febr. 9, 1926 in Crescent, IA to Jess Alfred & Daisy (Collins) Belt. Following high school, Mel faithfully served his country in the Army during WWII. He was united in marriage to Joy Janet McQueen on April 19, 1948 in Hiawatha, KS. To this union five children were born, Paul, Steven, Linda, Roger and Thomas.

Mel owned and operated Mel’s Auto Body in Glenwood for many years. He was later employed at the Glenwood Resource Center in the Advanced Custodial Training Dept. and was also an Associate on the Special Ed bus. He was a member of the American Legion Post 141. Mel loved to go for a drive and enjoyed good food, a bowl of ice cream and Diet Coke. In earlier years he competed in field trialing his dogs. He had a passion for hunting as well as reading a good Western novel.

Preceding Mel in death were his parents and one sister. He is survived by his wife, Joy Belt of Glenwood, IA; children, Paul D. Belt and companion Cheryl Alter of FL; Denise Belt of FL; Steven D. and wife Deanna Belt of Phoenix, AZ; Linda Barbour of Glenwood, IA: Roger and wife Shawn Belt of Omaha, NE; Thomas D. and wife Arlene Belt of Glenwood, IA: 16 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; siblings, Carl Belt of Council Bluffs, IA; Eileen and husband Dave Housley of FL; Kathy and husband Sam Godsey of Council Bluffs, IA; Gary and wife Joanne Belt of MO; Ruth Belt of MI; several nieces, nephews, extended relatives and many friends.
