2nd LT Blaine Bertrand Wilcox (Alias Pee-wee) was born on Feb. 2,1918 to HB and Cecil Wilcox (Anderson) on a county farm in the Pony Creek area, NW of Glenwood, Iowa. He was one of 7 children; Beulah Clark (Alton Clair Clark), Julene Wilcox (died in infancy), Elmo Wilcox (Maxine), Darlene Durkee (Melvin), LaVal Wilcox (died in WW II) and Lee Warren Wilcox (Virginia).
Blaine, after High School worked on farm and on the railroad.
Blaine was also on the State Championship Kittenball team. Their uniforms are still on display in the Mills County Museum.
Blaine married Wanda Durkee of Pacific Junction, Iowa in 1941. They were blessed with a son David Wilcox.
Blaine was commissioned on Feb. 1943 with Unit: 613th Bombardment Squadron, 401st Bombardment Group, 8th Air Force. The name of his plane was “Son of a Blitz”. His position on the plane was Bombardier.
On October 7th, 1944, while over their target around Kattenhof, Germany, his aircraft took a direct hit and all 9 crew members were Killed In Action.
All 9 crew members were discovered in unmarked graves. Blaine was officially identified on April 1, 2025 at the Offutt Air Force Base.
Blaine received several medals. They are: Purple Heart; Air Medal; American Campaign Medal; European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal; World War II Victory Medal and the Honorable Service Lapel Button WW II.
After 81 years, Blaine Wilcox is finally coming home.
Blaine is survived by many extended family and friends.
