Betty Jean (McMullen) Stortenbecker

Celebration of Life Gathering: Friday, June 17, 2022, 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., Silver City, Iowa American Legion Gordon May Post 439, 403 Main Street, Silver City, Iowa.

Betty Jean (McMullen) Stortenbecker, 77 of Shenandoah, Iowa passed away June 3, 2022 in Shenandoah. She was born November 24, 1944 in Council Bluffs, Iowa to John Clint and Florence Lucinda (Bostwick) MuMullen. She was raised on the family farm northeast of Silver City, Iowa along with two sisters and three brothers. They were a big, close-knit family. Betty graduated from Malvern High School in 1963.

Betty loved being the mother of her four boys and enjoyed her role as a homemaker. She was a talented seamstress making most of her own clothes. Betty was always well dressed and took pride in her and her family’s appearance, often coordinating the boys’ clothes when they were little. Betty was a fantastic cook making all kinds recipes, especially desserts for friends and family. Betty’s cookies, brownies, jelly roll cakes and crème filled cupcakes were her specialty. It was a great day when Betty would stop by and surprise you with a pan of brownies or a tray of crème filled cupcakes!

Preceding Betty in passing were her parents, brother Lonnie McMullen, sister Leona Andersen, brother-in-law Roger Andersen, brother-in-law Jerry Ord, infant twin great-grandsons, William Leroy and Alexander Jay Stortenbecker. Survivors include her sons Leroy and wife Kelly Stortenbecker of Hastings, Iowa; Gary Stortenbecker of Garden City, Kansas; Rodney and wife Christine Stortenbecker of Van Meter, Iowa; John and wife Jennifer Stortenbecker of Glenwood, Iowa; 9 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; siblings Lucille Ord of Silver City, Iowa; Leonard (Lois) McMullen of Silver City, Iowa; Patrick (Nancy) McMullen of Silver City, Iowa and sister-in-law Patricia McMullen of Council Bluffs, Iowa; several nieces, nephews, extended  relatives and many friends.

Interment, at a later date, Hazel Dell Cemetery, 23109 205th Street, Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Memorial donations may be directed to the Malvern Student Loan Fund, a fund that gives zero percent interest loans to East Mills college bound students, c/o Malvern Bank, Malvern, Iowa.
