Thelma Grace (Wheeler) McClurkin, 91, of Glenwood, IA, entered into eternal rest on January 23, 2006 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. She was born September 2, 1914 on a farm near Glenwood, IA to William Whiting and Nellie Jane (Wright) Wheeler. She attended Little Brick country school, graduated from Glenwood High School and Van Sant Business School in Omaha. Thelma took the Civil Service exam and received a telegram the week of Pearl Harbor to accept a job in Washington, D.C. It was at a sorority dance where she met Mac. The couple married on July 5, 1950 at Fort Myers Chapel in Arlington, VA. Thelma took time off from working to be with Mac as they moved to San Francisco, CA and later to Johnson Air Force Base, Japan. They had a son, James Wheeler born on January 2, 1952 in Bellevue, Nebraska and a daughter, Sandra Lee born August 12, 1953 in Japan. Sandra was born with a heart condition which caused her death. She passed away on November 21, 1953 while on the plane returning to the United States. The rest of their military life was spent in Washington, D.C. until retirement in 1974. They felt there was no better place to relocate than Glenwood. Thelma was an active member of First Christian Church, enjoyed sewing and being with family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Mac in 2003, daughter Sandra Lee, sisters, Beulah and Jessie and brothers, Bert and Charlie. She is survived by son, James Wheeler McClurkin of Florida, granddaughter, Carrie Susan and husband Benjamin Warren Friddle of Cullowhee, NC, sisters, Phyllis and husband August Pontow of Hastings, IA, Helen and husband Bruno Leu of Glenwood, IA, sister-in-law, Peggy Wheeler of Tabor, IA, several nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
