Max Lee Hammer, 79, of Glenwood, Iowa, entered into eternal rest on Aug. 5, 2010 at the Hospice House in Glenwood. He was born Dec. 21, 1930 in Glenwood, Iowa to Herby Henry (H.H.) & Ethel Mae (Speck) Hammer. Max was raised in Glenwood and graduated from Glenwood High School in 1949. He faithfully served his country in the Air Force during the Korean War.

Max was united in marriage to Joan Graves on May 22, 1955 at the Grace United Methodist Church in Glenwood. To this union two children were born, Debra and Douglas. Max was employed with the Glenwood Police Department as a Police Officer until his retirement. He served on the Glenwood Fire Department from September of 1961-January of 1997 and was a former Chief. Max was also a member of the American Legion Post 141, Mason’s, Southwest Iowa Sportsman Club and Grace United Methodist Church. He enjoyed hunting in his earlier years and in later years shooting trap and skeet at the Sportsman Club. Joan and Max loved traveling and took many trips throughout their life together.

Preceding Max in death were his parents, H.H. & Ethel Hammer and brother, Herby Hammer, Jr. He is survived by his wife, Joan Hammer of Glenwood, Iowa; children, Debra Jeter of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Douglas Lee & wife Deborah Hammer of Harlan, Iowa; grandchildren, Jonathan & wife Jenna Jeter of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Sarah Jeter of Malvern, Iowa; siblings, Marge Stone of Glenwood, Iowa; Roy Hammer; Kenneth & wife Jonnie Hammer of Glenwood, Iowa; several nieces, nephews, extended relatives and a host of friends.
