Helping Families and Friends Honor Their Loved One for over 100 years.

Janice Forney

Janice Florence Cargill was born in a primitive log cabin near Denby, SD. Her parents, Clarence and Florence Cargill, rented this dirt floor cabin located on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. By the time she was ready to attend school, the family moved to Tabor, IA. She lived in Tabor all her school years plus a few more. She graduated from Tarkio College in Tarkio, MO.

Janice met Bob Forney on bus rides to and from Omaha where Janice was working and Bob was attending college. In 1948, Janice Cargill married Bob Forney in Tabor. In 1950, their daughter, Diana Lea was born. The following year, their son, Rodney Carroll was born. Unfortunately, Rodney died shortly after birth. However, they had many joyful years being parents to Diana. Tragically, she died at age 9 after a year of battling acute leukemia.

Janice and Bob were both teachers and most of those years were with the Glenwood school system. Janice started teaching at Bartlett, a year before she married Bob. Both taught for two years in Thurman and then three years in Elliott. They moved to Glenwood when Bob got a teaching job there. Janice substituted and worked as a secretary at the junior high for a couple years. She then taught at Pacific Junction for 10 years and finally eleven years at Glenwood Northeast Elementary. They both greatly enjoyed their careers in education.

Janice and Bob lived in the same home on North Locust Street for many decades. They also had an acreage between Tabor and Thurman that they spent much of their time on weekends and summers. Janice did some traveling with the Glenwood band during the years Bob directed them. This included the year the band performed in the Lion’s parade in Miami, FL. They were great gardeners winning “Yard of the Month” more than once. They were members of the First Congregational Church. Bob and Janice were also avid bowlers for many years and attended competitions in Council Bluffs, Muscatine and St. Paul. They traveled on occasion to several U.S. locations. Janice was also active in Red Hat Club for several years.

Janice lost Bob due to failing health in 2005. In 2011, Janice’s health took a turn for the worse and had to move to Glen Haven Home.

Janice Forney was preceded in death by her son, Rodney; daughter, Diana; husband Bob; her parents, Clarence and Florence Cargill; and brother, Lawrence Cargill. Janice is survived by her sister, Alice Reberry of Littleton, CO; nephews, Mike, Tom & Gordon Reberry; Bob’s nephews, Ronnie Forney, Gary Vanatta and niece, Dana Madison; extended relatives and many friends.

Interment will be held in the Tabor Cemetery, Tabor, Iowa.

Memorials may be made to the Glenwood Fire and Rescue or Glenwood Public Library.

Janice and Bob played a significant role in the development of so many Glenwood students. Even at that young age you knew they cared about you and acknowledged your accomplished. I’m so glad we had these great years in their care. Those marches around the square; early morning practice sessions on the football field; and many performances will always be remembered! They were a blessing in our lives.
