Bob Forney

Robert (Bob) Carroll Forney was born December 16, 1924 to Lester Leroy Forney and Dorothy June Forney in Thurman, Iowa. Basically, most of his grade school years were spent at the Dutch Hollow School. From there he attended Thurman High School and graduated in 1942. After graduation Bob enlisted in the army where he served in a tank destroyer unit. During his stay in the army he earned four battle stars for overseas combat. After his discharge he enrolled in Creighton University.

In 1948 Bob married Janice Cargill. From this union two children were born, Diana Lea Forney and Rodney Carroll Forney.

After graduating from Creighton in 1950 Bob taught school in Thurman for two years, Elliott for three years and Glenwood until his retirement in l986.

Bob greatly enjoyed his years with the Glenwood band and still enjoyed visiting with his past band members. After eleven years Bob returned to Creighton and earned a Masters Degree in Guidance. He continued to work as Middle School guidance counselor until his retirement.

Bob enjoyed his daughter Diana and was devastated when she passed away with leukemia.

Bob enjoyed pitching horseshoes and playing for dances. After the death of his daughter he enjoyed bowling, singles, doubles and teams with his wife.

In their later years, Bob and Janice enjoyed many hours of fun and relaxation on a farm north of Thurman.

His health required him to move to Tabor Manor in June 2005. He passed away July 9, 2005 at the age of 80 years, 6 months and 23 days.

He was preceded in death by his son, Rodney, and daughter, Diana Lea, his parents, brother and wife Ansel and Merna Forney, sister, Dorothy Vanatta and nephews Terry Forney and Dennis Vanatta.

Bob is survived by his wife Janice, brother, Vernon Forney, nephews Ronnie and wife Dolores, Gary Vanatta and wife Kathy, niece Dana Madison and husband Robert, brother-in-law Darrell Vanatta, sister- in- law Alice Reberry and her sons Michael and wife Linda, Thomas, and Gordon and wife Debra, other relatives and friends.
